It is jarring to read that man’s last name in the same sentence as Eisenhower. My uncle went in with Patton’s Third Army, fought a terrible slog over there and was awarded the Bronze Star. It troubles me that he is buried in New Jersey, as this country has lost every shred of its dignity.
My uncle also served as a bomber pilot in Europe during WW2!
As Steve says, our fight for freedom, though way less deadly than our forebears’, must be waged with equal intensity now, regardless of vastly different circumstances.
Your post frightens and disturbs me, especially as a rabbi for 55 years. Our country and world are gripped in revisionism; especially questioning the reality of the Holocaust. Within too few years there will be no eyewitnesses; neither liberators nor liberated. Who will insure the voice of history? No one in this present Administration.
There are still VIDEO & recorded testimony from many involved, both German & victims. To forget what happened & to allow it again will be a humanitarian worldwide catastrophe. Education is key *See Holocaust Museum. In fact, when Robert Mueller was the FBI Director, a visit to the museum for recruits was part of the training, as a reminder of what evil can occur & HOW to avoid it again.
It is your job and ours to continue to remind people of the past and how we must continue to change it for the betterment of people.
Trump forgets there is someone above all of us. GOD.
I am not authority on the Kabbalah but I have studied it.
Trump will live in the ten lower hells when he leaves this Earth plane for what he has done to mankind. Destroying everything in his wake, including the forests and nature that God has provided.
We must do our part even if we take our children to meet some of the very last survivors of the War at nursing homes to listen to them share their experiences with the younger generation, hopefully making an impact on their future choices.
Amen, and yet in this moment it is Germany who better honors the memory of the Holocaust than Israel. How utterly ironic!
The current government of Israel, by its actions towards innocent civilians since the obscene Hamas attack on Oct. 7th, 2023, has contributed to inflaming the level of world-wide antisemitism that we haven’t seen since WW2.
Granted this is a very complicated situation which illustrates the enduring universal dynamic of good (light) vs. evil (shadow) in all of us!
Steven G, you are so right about Germany doing an excellent job in taking the responsibilties of their Nazi era actions. My favorite city to visit is Berlin.
Actually, i could write for a week on the subject.
I hope that all of you with fathers, grandfathers, uncles, etc who fought in WW2 or Korea or Vietnam were able to sit down with them and record their reminiscences. Our father fought in the Pacific (Alaska), and we’ve not been able to ascertain much information about his war experiences.
My sibs and I regret we never questioned our father more. He was a great reader of history, yet had little desire to talk about his own. We don’t know whether he was drafted or enlisted. We know he was a Sergeant despite his being a college graduate. Evidently his records were in a fire in St Louis years ago.
Such an excellent article. We all need to be reminded of the sacrifices made by the men and women who defended civilization ; the right to a Democratic way of life ; the right to be defended by the Rule of Law created decades ago; the right to all that our Constitution has provided. Our veterans swore to defend and protect each of these vital principles for each and everyone of us! They did so at a great cost because they loved what the United States stood for then and millions of us still believe in now.
Thank you for this important and touching reminder of what our country has been and can be again - one prays. Along with our allies we were decent and courageous and strong in action and in beliefs. One hopes to revive such valuable character and politics.
Thank you for the warning that humans have short memories. Time after time tragedy strikes 80 - 100 years after the last tragic event. A perfect example of this: the kids washed away at the camp in Texas. Time after time, it happens over and over. It's been 81 years since the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
This week, I'm grateful that other countries are stepping into the void created by Mike Johnson, John Roberts, Thune, etc. It is like a breach in the timeline of the world. A threshold nobody was ready for and nobody wanted to cross. Chaos.
Once the rest of the world frees itself from the hegemony of the dollar, they'll be able to exert even more pressure on us. It is very destabilizing for the US but also was underway for a long time before Trump, being discussed in an orderly way. NOW, it's chaos because it's happening all at once.
I think we're in for serious inflation once the dollar is no longer the reserve currency of the world. I'll bet Trump tries to actually declare bankruptcy on our national debt.
Extremely critical insight, one that should be more widely share. You are fight on the money: Putin said that the dissolution of the Soviet Union was the greatest tragedy of the 20th Century, a tragedy for which someone had to pay. The obvious villain was the U.S. although there were other causes of the event. Trump evidently owes the Russians a huge wad of money and as a result they have their claws in him. A Trojan Horse. A Manchurian Candidate. He has proven to be an excellent.investment on their part, as he has deliberately wrecked our beloved country in every way imaginable, possibly irrevocably. A traitor
worthy of Eternal torment in that innermost circle of He'll to which Dante consigned those other arch traitors, Judas &
I do so wish someone would produce hard proof of putin's control over trump. I know trump's actions prove his enslavement, but MAYBE hard proof would convince even magat world.
It is unfortunate that for most Americans the rise of totalitarianism in Europe during the 1920's and 30's and the consequent horrors of WWII are ancient history and hence irrelevant.
Before Pearl Harbor a majority of Americans didn’t want to fight Germany and Japan. Besides, there was the American Bund movement (a precursor to Maga) that was very strong here until our joining Britain and Russia in the war against fascism.
Donald Trump is neither FDR or Truman. He said he would hire only the best people. Instead, he hires from the Fox News PR firm to flatter his ego. I could not imagine a more unqualified person to run the Defense Department than Pete Hegseth. He talks when he should listen. He fires the best and the brightest Generals before going into a battle for the reason that they promote the deserving regardless of color. He reveals battlefield strategies on open platforms then denies their significance. Hegseth has no leadership abilities and when his strategy of no strategy fails, he blames others. He blames the media for questioning his failures. It has gotten so bad that the American people are rooting for Iran to succeed because they hate the reality TV show our defense department has become.
“This is why remembrance matters now more than ever because, once the witnesses disappear, the charlatans rush into the vacuum. They wrap themselves in borrowed glory.”
How true. But “borrowed” suggests a frictionless passage. Perhaps “purloined glory” is more to your point.
Thank you, Steve, for your inexhaustible flow of knowledge, bound in history and lilting, powerful language. I don't know how you're doing this day after day. But you are and I am bouyed up by your incredible strength.
Me too, Sandra. Steve's words, often brutal truths that are hard to hear, keep me grounded in reality and focused on our mission to liberate ourselves from the current Regime.
My dad, John W. Trantham Jr. already left this life after serving in WW2 as a Navy Seabee. He only had an eighth grade education due to family issues where he began his working class life. He was an amazing man, loving his family & community after serving on the Solomon Islands building runways for the aircraft to cont & go during the war. He never told me anything about his experiences but I found some photos he struggled with alcoholism for years but was a union Ironworker & even elected president of his local & represented his local at national convention in 1959. He built us a house in the country where he & my teenaged brother framed it & did other parts of its construction. He took me to his company’s credit union to open my first bank account to teach me not to trust banks. He took me to buy my first band instrument rather than renting one. He & my mother gave me a wonderful childhood. He bought a small motor boat to go out to events with his company’s employee group for boating/picnics. He later became a shrimper with an old boat he & my brother fixed up & started shrimping in the gulf out of Texas City, Tx. I had a wonderful childhood because of my mother & father. I’m a Democrat because of him but I’m ashamed of how many of them have gotten lazy or whatever their problems are that they don’t fight like our lives depend on them. Then I found the Lincoln Project & other variations of your group who are leading the real fight to have our democratic republic. I listen to your group everyday & though I haven’t financially supported you, I buy shirts & signs to share the message of the movement your group has been doing for years. God bless each of you for getting the truth about your movement to the people of America. You are the heroes. I hope I’m posting this message in the correct place to get the message out to everyone.

Those bomber wings over Europe had the highest mortality rate of the war.
My uncle Mike survived and thrived after the war, passing away in 2002!
My uncle also survived the war and passed away in 1973.
We were both fortunate to have them!

Spielberg's video legacy exists, but I this era of AI and manipulation, how will truth be confirmed in the future?
By our collective shared resistance and testimony now; plus a huge number of us VOTING in November!!!
It is your job and ours to continue to remind people of the past and how we must continue to change it for the betterment of people.

There is a rumor that this orange man is a complete imbecile.

It's not a rumor. It's fact.

Hegseth should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as Eisenhower.
Or any of the military he has fired.

As is so often said, Trump kills whatever he touches. That is why Putin chose Trump as the vehicle for his revenge against the US.

USA’s and humans’ everywhere) Karmic lesson for this time: “No pain/no gain”…one we’ve been avoiding to our peril, now more than ever!!!
And this guy is still in charge and the Republican Confederacy is working on our elections.
My father was in New Guinea. He would be crying.

I think both Trump, who foolishly sought to begin this war, and Iran want to succeed at ending it now but there is this Israeli government wild card.
“This is why remembrance matters now more than ever because, once the witnesses disappear, the charlatans rush into the vacuum. They wrap themselves in borrowed glory.”

Steve, I very much look forward to hearing Bishop Barber later today. Thank you for having me as your guest.
Oops/ I meant having Him as your guest! 😊
We are guests too from the internet!!!
Thanks, Steven!

It was jarring to see those two names in the same sentence. There is no linkage between them that bears mention.
