Empathy is demanded by Bessent for the man who has empathy for no one!!!! He talks about the warranted search of Mar-a-Lago as if it were a devastating blow to an honorable man, forgetting to mention the thousands of government documents, some highly classified, that Trump illegally took with him and carelessly stored at Mar-a-Lago when he left the WH.

Will this insanity ever end? The self-righteous look on Bessent's face as he excused Trump's disgusting pleasure at a truly honorable man's death chilled my blood. Lest we forget, Mueller said there was not enough evidence to exonerate or indict Trump and this was enough for the evil and menacing megalomaniac in the WH to celebrate his death.

If America accepts this, we have lost our soul.

Thomas Locatell's avatar

Pardon, slight correction. A DOJ memo prevents a sitting president from being indicted. His hands were tied, which is bs imo.

Betty Moyers's avatar

Something should have been done long before he was president.

Robert Deutsch's avatar

Very true. The custom of refraining from prosecuting a sitting president was but a DOJ policy. It was never the law, and the precedent in the last days of Nixon's time was actually contrary to the policy. Mueller's only mistake was failing to challenge the policy, which he could have done by bringing appropriate charges against Trump.

Anthony j. Santo's avatar

Thomas, thanks for pointing that out. The record stands corrected.

Martin Dillon's avatar

I want to go one step further. Mueller's remark on Trump's exoneration applied only to the Russian conspiracy, not to the other charges in the report. The other charges, for which there was sufficient evidence for indictments, were left to the future Department of Justice to bring against Trump.

Thomas Locatell's avatar

Thank you for the confirmation, I was going by memory, which at my age....

Thomas Locatell's avatar

You would do the same for me.

Gail Chandler's avatar

All absolutely true. Just a clarification, Bessent was wrong on associating Mueller with the classified docs case. Mueller oversaw the SC Russian election interference case. Even that bobble head Bessent can’t keep all of his boss’ crimes straight.

Anthony j. Santo's avatar

I think that observation is important.

Husaria's avatar

Sec. Bessent was simply applying the Faux News principle.

And, that is in short “ what-about-ism “ ( WAI ). The asked question is never important. The response is always….” well, what about…..”

Even though ole’ Scotty couldn’t decipher the difference between Mueller’s investigation and the Mar-A-Lago clusterfuck it doesn’t matter. WAI covers everything and makes it, at least in their view, all acceptable.

This sort of defense IMO is 100% weak sauce on an indefensible burger with fries.

I seem to remember hearing over and over again as young kid two wrongs don’t make a right. Whenever I got in trouble as a kid and used the WAI defense I was always told two wrongs don't make a right. It doesn’t matter you did wrong and got caught. End of story. You’re grounded for a week.

The orange imbecile and his collaborators never learned that lesson in their childhood. So much dysfunction, so little time, so disgusting to listen to.

Lisa Nystrom's avatar

You read my mind, Anthony. He asked for all of this scrutiny with his blatant disregard for the Rule of Law in this country. He “special” alright… “special ed”!🤬

Husaria's avatar

He was also showing off his fascist street cred.

Cruelty and fear are the fuel of all fascists. America use to run on Dunkin’. It now runs on cruelty and fear.

Sec. Bessett is every bit a fascist as Steven Miller. He just isn’t as vocal about it.

The other part of Lincoln’s statement is “with malice toward none.”

In the South we have Senator Katie Britt who only recently realized that ICE thugs abusing children was a bad thing. Or Senator Tommy Tuberville demonizing people of the Muslim faith who are Americans. Or Senator Marsha Blackburn, who opposed The Violence Against Women Act because it included protections for gay women.

I think it is entirely justified to have malice when the above is considered.

Anthony j. Santo's avatar

Much of MAGA's evil, especially as manifested in Tuberville's hatred of Muslims, can only be understood through an understanding of the harmful consequences of religious extremism:

"Religious beliefs--and their ideological equivalents--need to be examined not only because they make dubious, yet consequential claims, but because they so often serve as a basis for rationalizing and furthering authoritarian political agendas. Obviously, Trump is exploiting the American religious Right, but leveraging religion for political ends is a worldwide phenomenon. Islam provides the backbone and justification for authoritarian regimes in Iran, Saudi-Arabia, and elsewhere; Russia is using the Orthodox Church to bless its 'anti-Nazi' crusade in Ukraine; Narenda Modi manipulates Hinduism to quash dissent in India; and their quasi-religious cults of personality prop up Xi Jinping's and Kim Jong Un's dictatorship.

One reason some people cling to religion is that it relieves them of the burden of thinking, especially as it relates to moral or policy issues. They have the illusion that they are following God's commands--which, of course, are just the commands of a priest, minister, rabbi, imam, guru, or other self-appointed conveyor of 'divine' instruction.

Humanists do not have that option. We have both dignity and the burden that comes with the realization that 'no god will save us; we must save ourselves.'" excerpted from a fund-raising letter from Free Inquiry" magazine

Martin Dillon's avatar

You are quite right that much mischief has been caused by rascals jerking the religious nose rings of the gullible faithful. But the rise of Trumpism is only partially to be blamed on the religion of the mindless poor. Which of our oligarchs is working hard to advance Christianity? I'm from a Catholic family deeply divided between Trumpists and non-trumpists. I've tried very hard over the Trump years to understand his appeal to the Trumpists. As nearly as I can tell, their religious feelings played a very small role in their attitude toward Trump. Has religion played a prominent role toward racism in the US? Yes, it did - among the abolitionists in the North. Religious belief plays the role defined by religious leaders, from the pharisees in Christ's times to the priests and ministers of our own times. I would not look to them to find the basis of Trumpism.

Who then? Corporate interests, human greed, the pursuit of power. The same old culprits blown out of proportion by technology, especially communications technology: the Web, YouTube, Tiktoc, etc and etc. Our regulatory mechanisms have failed to keep up with the rapid evolution of our systems. The unequal distribution of wealth has created forces too powerful to control in a democracy. The combination of technology, vulnerable financial systems and a less than perfect human nature is destroying us.

We are far down the road to destruction. Think of it. A single billionaire, with a small portion of his wealth, can raise a person of the likes of JD Vance to the vice presidency. People in rural areas of the country don't have hospitals and quarterbacks in a game called football can achieve "generational wealth" of hundreds of millions of dollars. Does that make any sense at all?

Anthony j. Santo's avatar

Religion has done some good. Men like MLK and Bishop Barber attempt(ed) to implement the imperatives of the New Testament, essentially the golden rule, to help the less fortunate and criticize the obsession of so many with the accumulation of money and material goods (Matthew 20: 40-45, the 8 beatitudes). The problem is that men like Franklin Graham, Peter Thiel, and Trump easily use religion to jerk the "nose rings of the gullible faithful." My point is, you do not need religion to be a moral person, a good person, who understands that our individual well-being is ultimately intrinsically bound to the well-being of the human community which is now a global community. And, in fact, charlatans often use religion to turn morality upside-down, as a tool to exploit "the gullible faithful." Being honest, part of this tactic is to get people to believe in absurdities and as Voltaire said, "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities."

This has led me to reject organized religion. I believe that consequential morality, based on reason and logic, is far less easily abused by charlatans. Its premise is simple: the good or evil of an action or belief is measured by the results of that action or belief. As you pointed out, the accumulation of enormous wealth in the hands of so few has had disastrous results. Government interventions should prevent the accumulation of the kind of wealth held by men like Thiel, Musk, Bezos, Trump and, for that matter, anyone else.

That is why I am a democratic socialist and believe that we should work toward eliminating poverty worldwide, not just within our borders.I fear that if the kind of world imagined by John Lennon in his song, appropriately entitled "Imagine," mankind will soon be extinct along with all other life Earth.

Lincoln was too soft on the South.

Rosie H.'s avatar

YES! We should have held every one of those southern traitors accountable. The fact that we didn’t means we left the rot festering. And here we are again. Disgusting.

Donna K. White's avatar

Lincoln was assassinated only four days after the Civil War ended. Who knows what he would have done, as far as holding the South accountable. History has a strange way of twisting results!

CJ's avatar

I think he died too soon. The VP who became president was heavily influenced by southern democrats to forgo implementing the full reconstruction plan. I’ve learned a lot about that period following Heather Cox Richardson

Bessent is a sick, sick human being. Trump commits crime after crime and they deny and make excuses. They want shoplifters to be jailed and believe we should throw away the key(Trump himself has stated he thinks we should “shoot them in the legs”).

These people will never change. My question is do they really believe themselves or do they know better and it is just ill intent.

Becca's avatar

I agree. I blame the American voter and citizens who do not volunteer to run for office to promote ideas and policies that resonate with communities and their own passions for change. Voters must push for term limits of Congress, SCOTUS, Presidency, leaders in House and Senate. The Senate filibuster has its advantages but nothing can pass if as is happening now, 1 political party will not compromise for the benefit of our country, law/order, We the People. What has been set up to operate quite well now is an autocratic Executive Branch that operates by fiat, SCOTUS that is partisan, writes decisions for the ages on Presidential immunity, no enforcement mechanism for court decisions except the ones that benefit the autocrats, no checks and balances. The Senate filibuster has to be modified, checks and balances put into the hands of We the People and the States so a Federal Government can never be run by a KING with military and DOJ and budgetary power to do whatever they want. Courts have to move more quickly on matters of consequence for country and people. Appeals to SCOTUS seem to come everyday because it is trump autocrats demanding decisions. Lower courts are overrruled regularly. Oh, I'll stop now. Sorry.

Oh the hypocrisy! Remember when Charlie Kirk died? Never served in the military, never did anything but make money and have a podcast, but boy you better not say anything bad. That would be disrespectful! Body was flown on AF2, body in Capitol, HUGE Trump rally funeral, flag half mast. Republicans went crazy! Just unbelievable! Read Mueller’s resume and ask anyone what kind of man he was. I will be thrilled the day Trump dies and I can say GOOD! I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people.

Becca's avatar

I agree entirely with Steve Scmidt. Our governments have become enemies of We the Majority of the People. Our morals, social standards, expectation of decency, civility, honesty, duty, respect especially in the most powerful people in our Federal Governments are being dismantled, erased and used as tools of punishment, cruelty by PEOPLE WE TAXPAYERS PAY TO SERVE AND PROTECT US! Tax Revolt, Boycotts, General Strikes, Sit-ins w/arrests, Marches, Demonstrations, GOOD TROUBLE, VOTE, VOLUNTEER. I am doing all I can and feel "in my bones" this is the moment to RISE UP to all WE can be. NO KINGS MUST BE MASSIVE! Change your W-2 to take the most deductions-don't let IRS have your money and be joyful for a refund, Sit-in and get arrested to keep ICE busy and detention centers full of citizens not innocent, law abiding non-white human beings.

There are no words to express how frustrating it is to have no control over what is happening. How do you control those who so willingly give in to this orange monster 👹? At what price are these people willing to sell their souls at the cost of so many people who have to suffer under this administration? And for what? I’m not going to live long enough to see it all played out but I am saddened by the fact that my grandchildren may never know what democracy and freedom feels like

CH's avatar

If you can hit the streets this Saturday and stand with fellow patriots it will truly lift your spirits and bolster your confidence in our democracy. Participation is mandatory for all who relish freedom. No Kings!

Donna K. White's avatar

I feel the same way! My heart aches for the future generations! Unless something changes, and quickly, America may never recover. Deborah, I vote, as I am sure that you do too; but I still feel so helpless, even betrayed, when I see the same people voted in for decades-Schumer, Graham, Cruz, etc. Or members of Congress, who run as a Democrat, but votes for the GOP/MAGA policies time and time again, like Fetterman! We are not being represented as we should be!

Then we have social media. Like everything else, social media has a good side, and a darker side. The darker side of social media has become a vehicle of hate and misinformation, not just from our enemies in the world, but also from our own government-our own president! Social media, has become a new weapon, that our enemies have been using, and it is aimed at our young people. The brainwashing, the isolation that it causes, can do more harm, to more people, than any bomb could. The evil side of social media creates weak people, and a weak country! Now frump is trying to do his best at reeling in the free press, not only the networks, and also at press conferences, inviting only the journalists who favor frump, or attacks and intimidates others.

I feel equally sad and frustrated!

The damage POSOTUS and the Repugnicans have done to our collective moral fiber is incalculable. For example, slaughtering 170 school girls on the first day of Netanyahu’s war hasn’t so much as generated an apology or a national self-reflection. But the price of gasoline? Now, that’s another matter, one that demands attention and outrage. And to be clear, it’s evident that some key Democrats are not particularly unhappy with this war, most notably Chuck Schumer. We’re going to need an epic disinfection.

TACO chickens out again! Iran has schooled Trump, and tanned his hide.

And a few adults visited Dr. Demento over the weekend.

Thomas Locatell's avatar

One thing I've always liked about Lincoln is that he did not hold himself above the fray. The legendary tales of the log-splitter, the wrassler, the indian fighter and the debater leave no doubt that he was not afraid of getting dirty. What he accomplished will live through the ages. He belongs to all of us.

TAS's avatar

Oh, I have been mistaken all along! I shouldn't be mad that they found that Trump stole classified docs (some of which might contain intelligence on Iran) and kept it as reading material in his bathroom while he takes a shit, but that they went through Melania's wardrobe! Now I have more empathy for how Trump disgustingly disparaged a true American patriot. My bad.

Patricia Baron's avatar

Lack of empathy is the cornerstone of MAGA and all fascist movements. That Donald should write such an offensive post about Mueller 's death comes as no surprise. This is the same "man" who would not attend Jimmy Carter's funeral, who puts kids in cages, who haphazardly bombs civilian targets in Iran and threatens to "obliterate " vital infrastructure that will affect millions of innocent Iranians, who "grabs women by the pussies," abuses 13 year old girls and talks about "taking" Gaza, Venezuela and Cuba, who murders people at sea and leaves them to drown...we could go on. There are too many examples of Trump's lack of empathy to list. Steve often compares MAGA to a cancer, and lack of empathy, like a cancer and all MAGA sickness grows and matasticizes. The war in Iran is the latest symptom of this malignancy.

Martin Dillon's avatar

I'm beginning to lose faith in human nature, not the political wisdom of the American people. TACO Trump just pulled another hoax out of the fire. After promising Armageddon if the Strait of Hormuz was not opened, he announces that promising talks with Iran were moving forward. And the market bounced! I guess that old saying, fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, three times, ... no longer applies. Trump pulls the same tricks over and over, with larger and larger stakes. And an entire financial industry rises or falls on his latest lies. You want to know how anyone could go bankrupt in the casino business? Watch Trump destroy the country.

In the meantime I fear that I detect a DACO - Democrats Always Chicken Out - over their demands that ICE be reformed. Trump will be getting what he wants for the budget. And SAVE? DACO there too, I suppose. I heard that ICE agents will be getting new uniforms - Brown shirts - for their roll in our nation's airports.

Donna K. White's avatar

Another lie, so that the stocks could rise today? MS NOW had on their banners that Iran denounced that there were "promising talks" about opening the Strait of Hormuz. What the Hell? Now, do we believe frump, or Iran?
