The fires continue to rage in California, while a tide of ill will for the Golden State is rising inside the MAGA Congress, where the Christian nationalist House Speaker has made clear that he will hold California hostage.
Mike Johnson is playing with fire.
Los Angelenos are Americans, and they are in deep trouble. Their abandonment at the altar of MAGA politics is immoral, outlandish and the beginning pages of a four-year journey that will brutalize this country by its end. What comes next will be forged from a misery that remains out of sight still for a great many Americans who lack imagination around the cost of the divisions and unfiltered malice that is seeping up out of the ground where MAGA treads.
The Los Angeles fire is a historic event, and a cataclysm that will be the costliest national disaster in American history, at the edge of an era during which the next catastrophe will soon be upon us. In a moment of real crisis, Mike Johnson has demonstrated his cruelty may be mild-mannered, but it is no less than the doses delivered with bombast.
It is also intolerable, divisive and morally bankrupt. In other words, par for the course.
Sixty days have passed since Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski began the great capitulation to Donald Trump — the man they called Hitler — with their shocking pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago.
Thirty-one days have passed since the Bob Iger/ABC News capitulation to Trump.
Zuckerberg, Bezos, Soon-Shiong, Altman, Ellison, Murdoch and Mickey Mouse are all tamed and in line, along with their vast assets.
This is what Trump observed about the American media a few weeks back, and he’s not wrong:
The media is tamed down a little bit. They’re liking us much better, I think…
Donald Trump wants a nice press, and he has gotten it. With less than a week left, what Joe Scarborough began has spread.
Moral appeasements always do.
Civility is a nice word. It is easily abused.
Being nice to Trump means being capitulant. When it comes to kneeling in front of the man whom Scarborough called Hitler, there is nothing civil about it. In fact, it is as indecent an act as there is.
Civility, in this case, means NEVER.
Congratulations to
and the guts, integrity and courage of and to walk away from what corrupt billionaires have burned down.I hope you will support their efforts and the cause they are taking a stand for. I know I will.
I worry about California and I worry about conditions here in this part of North Carolina. We have had very cold weather and the communities and churches are doing everything possible to shelter the homeless. The homeless level in our country is at the highest level ever recorded and the homeless here are in danger of freezing to death. I am asking the oligarchs to get off their collective yachts and help us save lives.
I wrote yesterday, immediately after hearing of and investing in an annual subscription to the Contrarian, I view my continued and ever-increasing investment in factual journalism as a very high-priority charitable cause. Thus because the subject of the cause is in mortal danger - American democracy is very ill, she’s sick, she’s dying, she’s on life support and needs our investment of dollars, minutes, brain cells, clear-eyed discernment.
Good luck and stay safe to what remains of our free and fair press.
