I am glad to see white haired women and men are no longer the majority of protest!

Some wanted us old people to be denied health care during COVID. They said WE would gladly forego treatment so younger people could live. Well, I think us Boomers and Resisters of the 60's, 70's and 80's have protest, rebellion in our DNA and you need to stop casting us a trump/GOP followers.

In my experience, the only oldsters that suppport trump/GOP are the really wealthy ones and they are a minority of us.

I'm old and proud and will RESIST until WE win or I die!

Yes! There were so many younger and non-white protesters out on Saturday, compared to prior protests! We are gaining steam!

Becca's avatar

So great! I may no longer go out in rain and cold here in the North!

Absolutely - right there with you!

I always thought boomers like us would not be MAGAts but here in my over 55+ central Florida community I have sadly discovered that I was wrong. We moved here four years ago but the house is for sale now. I can’t stay here even if it means returning to the frozen blue north. However, I was pleased with the protest turnout on Saturday, as others have said, more younger people than previously.

Becca's avatar

Depends on the areas you live in, I think. I boycott FL and all Red States in my purchases , services, check headquarters, no vacations in those places.

I have done this since 2017 as I saw this all coming if GOP/MAGA/trump continued trying to make USA into oligarchy, autocracy. I studied history, psychology, sociology, economics, Machiavelli, "1984." human nature, animal/male dominated societies and my long life experiences.

Same in Austin! Lots of young people Saturday, whereas, in prior rallies, it was us baby boomers, old hippies, that were there. Made friends!

Great! Texas turns around?

We keep working on it ... but we're not nearly there yet! There's abbott and all the other reps, officials, who think they're patriots, doing trump's bidding. Being a border state, they can ramp up all kinds of animosity on brown-skinned people, but who does their gardening?, builds the houses?, clears away debris from storms, works in restaurant kitchens, ..... and on and on and on! It's frustrating to see TRUTH, yet so many have hard hearts.

And if any of you old people looking for a like minded date? Lordy they was quite a few single men and women ! So get out there and maybe make a connection! Brought to you by get your ass out there and protest!🤩

Our small town in Marquette, Michigan showed up with thousands in a joyful protest on Saturday. And at each rally/protest, we collect food from community members for our local food banks. We collected hundreds of pounds of food, toiletries, household products, etc. at the No Kings event, plus, we do collections at our weekly meetings. What has the “other side” done? Spread hate and violence. We will win.

Marcia's avatar

Great idea with the food drive.

I think a good strategy for the marathon of protest that lies before us, is to change things up now and then.

After Hands Off and No Kings, we might protest in a different way. A national strike or ten targeted companies to boycott for one month, etc. would keep the opposition alive and kicking, and would widen the circle of engagement.

Not everyone wishing to protest can or should take to the streets. Let’s give more people an opportunity to get in the fight.

Love the art by Lisa! Thank you both!

A targeted and sustained economic boycott would be good. Identify who or what to boycott and then just do it.

Anthony j. Santo's avatar

An economic boycott would be the most effective strategy in our tool kit of non-violent forms of protest. It won't be easy for many of us to boycott Amazon, Meta, and other Trump supporting businesses. However, it would be much easier than living in a country totally under Trump/Maga/Christian Nationalist control. Think of America as Gilead; that should give us the strength to engage totally in planned boycotts.

Please, some leader out there. Give us a list and encourage all of us to participate fully.

Beth Ewell's avatar

theonecalledjai on Instagram has more information on the boycotts.

Beth, Thank you for the links.

Here’s a Newsweek article on trump supporters.

https://www.newsweek.com/american-businesses-supporting-donating-donald-trump-list-2027957

Perhaps we take one social media company, one national hotel chain, one food supplier, etc etc to make a dirty dozen list of companies to boycott.

Not sure how to really make it effective… other people know those things, but I would guess to boycott for at least a month.

Much to think about.

General strike, yes!

Trump has started a civil war. The shots have not rang out yet but he is actively seeking the opportunity to use violence against those in blue states who refuse to kowtow to him. In his attempts to subdue the blue states, he has misused the National Guard and the military; he has threatened to withhold federal funds if they don't accept his policies; he has threatened peaceful protesters with "big force." He wants chaos, an excuse to shoot at us. We must not give it to him. We must continue to protest non-violently in huge numbers and continue making him look like the fool he is, as we did on June 14.

Charles Bryan's avatar

By my reckoning, the body count thus far is 4 in Civil War, v. 2.0: the two Rittenhouse gunned down plus the two whom Boelter murdered on the weekend.

N.B. Non-violence works only on foes with a moral conscience. It does not work on a gaggle of sociopaths like MAGA or, before them, the Nazis. Gandhi thus stated that Jews wete morally justified to use violence to defend themselves against Nazis.

Steve,

I read your posts daily. I seldom post replies because I am at a loss for words. It is important for you to know that many, many of us take your words to heart and are engaged in this crucial struggle for American Democracy.

I bet Steven Scheung WH (and former UFC) Communications Director wrote the disgusting post.

"Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

The Biden Administration and Governor Newscum flooded America with 21 Million Illegal Aliens, destroying Schools, Hospitals and Communities, and consuming untold Billions of Dollars in Free Welfare. All of them have to go home, as do countless other Illegals and Criminals, who will turn us into a bankrupt Third World Nation. America was invaded and occupied. I am reversing the Invasion. It’s called Remigration. Our courageous ICE Officers, who are daily being subjected to doxxing and murder threats, are HEROES. We will always have their back as they carry out this noble mission. America will be for Americans again!"

The man who wrote that post is a lying sadistic monster. Many undocumented immigrants do essential but low-paying work in our hospitals, schools, and communities. He, not they, "will turn us into a bankrupt Third World Nation." Most of them pay taxes and get far less in return than citizens. And what is "remigration?" Could that mean sending undesirable Americans, based on their skin color, ethnicity, and politics back to their countries of origin, even if their grandparents are the ones who left their homeland to come to America? Trump and his evil administration should self-deport immediately if they want America to "be for Americans again!" Or, does he mean to return American territory to Native Americans? No, not that. Courageous people do not brutally round up the defenseless and send them to concentration camps with no due process even if they are 4 year olds receiving cancer care.

Re: the toilet tweet and duck lips. This is why Democrat legislators are being murdered, and it's only the beginning. It's also why patriotic Americans are showing up across the country in tens of millions to resist the Regime.

Our problem is how to convince those that continue to support Trump that he and other Maga politicians are a font of endless lies and do not reflect the values of true Christianity but of oligarchs, autocrats, and racists. Trump supporters don’t read these posts, but we should use information such as contained in the post below to write letters to editors and when we talk to the disinterested, fence-sitters, and even cultists; devotees of cults have been successfully de-programmed:

“Utah Republican Mike Lee has come under fire for labelling the suspected Minnesota 'assassin' as a 'Marxist', while sharing a chilling image of the masked perpetrator. He posted: ‘This is what happens... When Marxists don't get their way,’ alongside a photo of alleged killer Vance Boelter, 57, dressed in a white vinyl mask and imitation police uniform knocking on the door of a Minnesota senator.

Community notes on the post swiftly corrected the poster. ‘There is no evidence Vance Boelter is a Marxist. The majority of evidence regarding his political beliefs points to him being an evangelical Christian conservative, and all of the names on his hit list are Democratic politicians and abortion rights activists,’ stated the fact-check feature.” https://www.express.co.uk/news/us/2069034/republican-senator-shamed-sharing-terrifying-image-suspected-minnesota-assassin

Gar Millar's avatar

I checked my news aggregator on Saturday to learn more about the assassin, and the profile from the New York Post (essentially a newspaper version of Fox News) was an object lesson in right wing propaganda. Without outright lying, their carefully crafted profile suggested the assassin was a democratic operative. Misinformation is the regimes greatest weapon.

Our words will not convince passionate trump supporters to change their hearts but reality will. There will be a lot of pain and suffering, and their passion will wane.

Our job going forward will not be to use words to convince but to use words that welcome. Welcome with sincerity, and no judgement. Welcome with the humility that admits that we are all imperfect. If we can do that, then we can build a better future.

The most challenging problem is to establish one predominant truth. Alternative realities confuse Trump supporters. The lies and disinformation stimulate deep feelings which then help facilitate distort of reality. Feelings dictate cognitive appraisals.

Envy is a major tool for control as minorities are portrayed as beneficiaries of unfair political and governmental assistance. God knows how trans community got scapegoated. Again envy and projection of fear of men n women’s lavatories and sports teams. Here is a small group of people with so many vulnerabilities being targeted.

ANDREW PARRILLO's avatar

Authoritarianism dies when the military is no longer even tacitly complicit and so it will be with Trump when he orders it to threaten and harm citizens more than he already has. This may mean a bloodbath on our city streets to arouse true outrage. We witnessed the first glimmer of that resistance with the out of step, off-cadence marching on Saturday.

The vitriolic replies by magas to those who lauded the protest on Saturday in various social media sites demonstrates what we confront. Self-righteousness masquerading as decency.

MM Harris's avatar

Yep. It takes real "courage" to hop out of unmarked vehicles, in unmarked masks, wearing often confusingly / misleadingly labeled "uniforms", laden with unnecessary military arms and "equipment" so the big strong "men" can enter unsuspecting schools and cafes, 4 to 5 in a group to attack one person, typically a woman or child. SOOO proud of them.
