Oh, if only we had known about Trump's character. Oh, we did. We elected a lying conman, a sexual predator, a convicted felon. Shame on main stream media and shame on us.
I agree, Jon, the shame belongs to those who voted for Trump and put him in office twice. I refuse to accept the blame for any of this devastation; that belongs to MAGA and all complicit Republicans. As horrible as it is for everyone, I believe we will come out of this era stronger, clearer, and more committed to our core values.
And now, hegseth is purging the military of all leaders whose first loyalty is to the Constitution instead of trump. The latest casualty is 4-star General Donahue who has been relieved of his command position and decided to retire. We will be at the mercy of trump, and his amoral character if we don't do something soon, very soon.
Join me in flying a Ukraine 🇺🇦 flag on this July 4th, our beloved country’s 🇺🇸 250th birthday, to commemorate the plain in-our-face fact that the Ukrainian people are now who ‘We the People’ were at our nation’s founding. I proudly will have ours’ 🇺🇦 flying on the front deck of our South Jersey Shore beachhouse.
I will also fly the beautiful flag of the noble Ukrainian people. They are the north star for all struggling democracies to follow, particularly our own.
Leading the world stage fight for democracy Ukraine is absolutely setting the pace !! -
Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦 !!
As for the U.S. our so-called "founding" began with the little mentioned, silenced - genocide of the welcoming First Nations People and the sacred buffalo, among countless other racist atrocities.
No longer tolerable to sweep these stories under the rug - that rug's been pulled from under US and the bill has finally come due with high interest !!
Time to own the full scope and scale of our nation's story if we truly seek to rebuild a sustainable democracy with an endurable Constitution forged with justice and freedom for all - and importantly accountability - especially for that one loose orange Jenga !!
You are so right and it’s not woke to tell the Truth. Soon under Trump and the republicans Truth will become a dirty word. This is Orwellian. We had many warnings. Only republicans believed Trump and his movement would make life better for all citizens. Tell this to Heather Hyer, Alex Pretti and Renee Goode. Where is justice for those murdered in cold blood by ICE? Why are they given 70 Billion dollars to arrest and kill more protestors. Bannon, Stone and Manafort planned this dictatorship and Project 2025 laid out their plan.
It should be noted that Tommy Tuberville and a handful of MAGA Senators voted against the bipartisan Housing Affordability Act. Even his clueless cohort, Kitchen Katie Britt, voted for the bill.
Alabama will make this man Governor in November because staying dirt poor is preferable. You cannot help people who refuse to help themselves.
And Tubervill lives in Florida. Makes you wonder if/how Alabamians can actually vote for this moron! God help us if these are the types of people continuing to lead our states/country!!
A strong democratic country requires a very strong education system which teaches future voters what is required in an elected leader, how to distinguish between truth and lies, what is demanded by the constitution and the legal system, what a strong country actually requires, why democracy is the best system and what their responsibility is towards maintains a strong country.
Democracy begins and ends with the voters. They have to be equipped to handle that responsibility rather than being misled by an entertaining but utterly immoral leader.
There should also be an adult education process to make up for the absence of these essential elements in the current education system.
You write "It happened because Donald Trump became president." That's too passive. It happened because 77 millions wanted Trump not despite but because of what he is, and they liked it, especially the sadism so overtly on display for his birthday at what's left of the White House. They also gave him the third branch of government to boot. That means the U.S. is a very different country than the one you wistfully write about and in which I grew up and thought I knew. Like what the UK did to itself with Brexit, it's a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and I'm afraid it's irreparable and incurable because we are in Caligula mode now.
I think what Steve said about trump encapsulates the 77 million who voted for him. But I agree, hearing it that way, that 77 million ignorant non- forward thinking stupid Americans got us here is more gut wrenching.
This sad truth needs to be shared. Thank you. Americans need to stop with the ‘Greatest Country Ever’ rhetoric and see the consequences of this despicable regime, which exposes them to the ridiculous absurdities they’ve chosen or allowed.
More than the profound distrust of the US that other nations now have, they see a nation”led” by a fella that is unreliable, self-absorbed,diminishing our principles every day..and wonder why we don’t do something about it.
Absolutely. There was always news about donald not allowing blacks to rent or buy his properties. He failed miserably in Atlantic City. My staunch republican banker brother never liked him because he never paid his bills. Media also holds responsibility for promoting donald. There were no journalists to question him. And now, his rich friends are buying media to control us. Our country has always been racist. He just made it ok for all the racists to come out of the woodwork like cockroaches. It was absolutely horrifying to me that my country would vote for an entitled racist over two extremely intelligent women. Obviously our country needs to reform our education system. To choose a convicted felon, a habitual liar, and a conman says a lot about our country. I can only hope that republicans will be held accountable for their actions.
God Thank You ! Steve..You have described it perfectly . I think Trump knows exactly what he is doing and wanted to do in the first term. In his crazy mind, I think he wants to be allied with Russia, China, North Korea, against NATO and all those "shithole countries" . Take there wealth in what ever form it is ..Minerals etc. He is a sick perverted man who if he has the physical strength will try to stay in power after his term is over. My anger is toward all the news outlets that have never reported the truth about him to the people who kept voting for him. And toward the Billionaires SCOTUS Congress the Senate ..Thank You so much for helping him destroy what people fought and died for. Sad in america
Steve's perspective today is totally on target and one we all should absorb and hold in our minds as we live from day to day in this cavalcade of destruction and loss instigated by Trump. The "big picture" is about what Trump has cost the United States as a presence in the world. The allies after WWII knew what was at stake, even if the optics revealed far less. Trump has never grasped even the most superficial understanding of how America became the nation it was when we arrived on the brink of the 21st century. It is up to us to see the threads that held the fabric of this nation together and save enough of them that a future worthy of our forebears can be rewoven.
Yeah, the agenda would be staying out of prison for any and all of the blatant crimes he has committed, especially the child sex-trafficking crimes, “allegedly “😖

It’s not “we”, it’s “they”. I never voted for him once. Did you vote for him Jon?
Of course not. By “us” I meant the American people

Forgive the name misspellings.

It’s in their hands and I am not optimistic they will do right by themselves.

This an urgent requirement.
It makes me so angry that this fool, this bozo, has gotten where he has.

Putin's puppet has served his master well.

Two points Steve makes in this commentary today really stand out as the fundamental errors in MAGA ideology:
"This is the paradox Trump never understood. The slogan was 'America First.' The result is America alone."
"There’s another lie that has accompanied this era of decline. It’s the poisonous lie that America’s diversity is a weakness. It’s the opposite."
Thank you Steve; I plan to use those quotes in my next letter to the editor.

If our respect in the world is ever to be regained, it won’t be thanks to corporate politicians of any stripe.
And there is no hope of changing his sick mind. This is how a crime family works. Either you support them or you are the enemy.
Steve, What is your theory on why Trump is so pathologically working to debase and degrade our country? He must have some agenda for this.
That would require him having a working brain, we all know he has shit for brains. 🤬🤬🤬
A lot of billions of dollars. Full stop.
