It took The New York Times 10 years, 6 months and 21 days to ask Donald Trump a single philosophical question that revealed who he was.
Almost eleven years.
Asked in a wide-ranging interview if there were any limits on his global powers, Trump said:
“Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”
“I don’t need international law,” he added. “I’m not looking to hurt people.”
When pressed further about whether his administration needed to abide by international law, Mr. Trump said, “I do.” But he made clear he would be the arbiter when such constraints applied to the United States.
“It depends what your definition of international law is,” he said.
The Constitution, the rule of law, international treaties, checks and balances mean nothing to Donald Trump, and obviously it wasn’t important enough for “Access Maggie” Haberman to ever ask about as she won a Pulitzer Prize for her coverage of Trump, while pocketing vital news to be merchandised later in a book. The stench will never fade, though there is finally company for Walter Duranty’s Pulitzer on its lonely and disgraceful shelf.
Almost 11 years.
Now we know.
The United States will be governed by whim and decree by the MAGA party. If we stay in line we can avoid being killed, according to a West Point graduate with an advanced degree from Cornell.
Heed the words of Congressman Wesley Hunt from Texas:

All of that is gone now, according to Donald Trump, Kristi Noem, who was confirmed with seven Democratic Senate votes, Pam Bondi, who has refused to appear before Congress, and Stephen Miller, the American Reich marshal, a broken boy filled with rage and addled by psychiatric illness.

JD seems to be enamored of the idea that he may soon be the law and an American Führer, guided by nothing besides his morality, which has instructed him that the ICE murderer Jonathan Ross is in fact a hero, not a panicky degenerate and low-rent thug.
In fact, JD has said that Ross holds “absolute immunity” when it comes to killing Americans and orphaning their children.
In fact, according to JD Vance, he could do it again tomorrow, and four days next week.
No doubt this explains the two latest ICE shootings in Portland.
Let’s play this out.
Trump, apparently like Adolf Hitler, is guided only by his “own morality,” and according to his MAGA lieutenants, he has the power to order the killing of anyone, anywhere at any time by a government militia, comprised of wack jobs, degenerates and extremists yearning to kill in the name of the White race that, according to the Nazi Elon Musk, is under siege.
Since Trump’s power is absolute and constrained only by Trump, and ICE can kill at will because, according to JD Vance, they have absolute immunity to execute any mom they choose and orphan their children, it would suggest that they believe they have the power to kill thousands of Americans on any given day without blinking an eye.
What happened yesterday was the Trump regime asserted the power to order an ICE helicopter to drop incendiary devices on American cities if they choose.
They could pull up in a truck, pull back the curtain, and let the .50 caliber machine gun rip.
Might makes right.
The gun is the law.
The killer is the jury.
The murderer is the judge.
So long as it fits within the moral frame of a pedophile’s “closest friend,” who raped his first wife, sexually fetishized his daughter, was found guilty of 34 felonies, accused of assaulting at least 28 women and running a fraudulent charity, university and other scams from big to small that are too voluminous to document in one essay.

This is what MAGA voted for.
This is what the Schumer Democrats voted to confirm.
This is America in 2026 and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the president of Germany, has rightly called out the evil:

My fourteen-year-old mind appreciated “1984” by George Orwell.
I understood its meaning, and was absolutely certain that no such totalitarianism could ever exist in America.
It was, however, clear that it existed in other places like the Soviet Union, China, Iran, and all of Eastern Europe.
What bound those totalitarian societies were the way that they perceived truth, reality, or even clear language as a threat.
Doublespeak existed as a daily practice over much of the world, where the state subjugated human beings. The truth was always strangled in dictatorships. What became true was what the leader said was true. There was no debate beyond that.
Among the greatest absurdities of the early 2000s was the insistence by Saddam Hussein’s spokesperson that there were no American tanks at the Baghdad airport when American tanks were there.
Sean Spicer one upped him in 2017 when on day one of the Trump administration he lied to the world in “Baghdad Bob” fashion, insisting A is bigger than B, when in fact B was much larger than A.
There are many differences between Iraq and the United States. Two of them are that Baghdad Bob doesn’t appear on any Iraqi newscasts as a commentator, and he never danced on national television in a neon yellow shirt.
There is an absurdism that is laughable between the antics of a Baghdad Bob or Sean Spicer, but there must also be a recognition between both of what is jointly chilling.
Absurd lies can quickly become deadly lies. Those lies can become profoundly insidious when mandated by the state as dogma that impedes the freedom of speech, conscience and faith.
In “1984,” Orwell introduces the concept of ‘doublespeak:’
To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself—that was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word—doublethink—involved the use of doublethink.
There is a symmetry bordering on uniformity of Soviet-era architecture that stretches across thousands of miles of Europe across dozens of countries.
It is soulless, brutal and ugly.
Everywhere there is a lack of aesthetics, meaning or purpose rendered as design.
Everything is bleak, hollow and grey.
The same is true for language.
Authoritarians hollow out the meaning of language and reduce words to pablum.
Slogans replace thoughts, and conformity becomes enforced between the boundary lines of what can and cannot be said.
The right combination of words can eviscerate meaning from any sentence and reduce it to a stultifying and stupefying stew of nothingness.
The nothingness can be applied in many directions, including for the purposes of advancing indifference against evil in the name of a dogma or new ‘ism’ that always holds at its core that grievances are legitimate and payback earned.
This ideology has been called many things, but no matter where it manifests itself or whatever it calls itself, it is antithetical to the concept of Americanism, which deserves robust defense — and now more than ever.
Where does all of this lead?
It leads here:
There is a grass field with a gentle slope outside of Prague.
A village called Lidice once stood there.
Lidice became world famous in 1942 when the world learned what happened to the tiny village.
The Nazis wiped it off the face of the earth and killed every man, woman and child who lived there. It was an act of retribution and the Nazi’s called it legal.
Most of the children would die by gas at the Chelmno extermination camp.
There were no Jews in Lidice.
Adolf Hitler personally ordered the destruction of the village and the salting of the earth as revenge for the assassination of Reinhardt Heydrich, referred to as the “Butcher of Prague.”
Heydrich was the principal architect of the Holocaust. He was assassinated by a team of Czech and Slovak commandoes who parachuted into their occupied homeland from Allied planes that departed from London.
They came to kill Heydrich, a ruthless war criminal and sociopath.
They accomplished their mission.
The men of Lidice were lined up by the SS. They gave the village priest an opportunity to live by walking away.
The priest chose to die with his flock.
He was murdered with his parishioners.
The children of Lidice are memorialized in a monument that marks the evil and murder that stole their lives at the hands of the SS. It is among the most haunting I have ever seen.
The Czech and Slovak paratroopers were hunted by the Gestapo and SS.
They were betrayed by one of their own – a man named Karel Curda, who would be hung after the war for his treachery and treason.
The paratroopers hid in the crypt and loft of Sts Cyril and Methodius church in Prague.
They were given sanctuary by the Orthodox bishop, who would be martyred for his love and courage.
The paratroopers killed scores of SS as they fought to their last rounds and to the death. None were captured alive.
Thousands of innocent people were murdered to avenge the life of the man, who six months earlier, had chaired the 90-minute meeting in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee, where the Final Solution was sanctified by Nazi law.
Democracy is what keeps all of us free from the jackboot.
There is always someone willing to bring it down on the heads of children.
Lidice is a reminder of what happens when the darkness doesn’t break, and the sun can’t rise.
Courage is what is required to defend freedom. Without it, freedom is extinguished.
The Nazi party like the MAGA movement was born out of grievance, resentment, inflation, a shattered economy, hate and lies.
It took more than a decade for the spell-binding orator and antisemite to lead the party from the Beer Hall to the Reichstag.
It took six months for the Nazis to extinguish democracy after they took elected power in 1932.
It took 10 more years after that before the meeting took place to plan the murder of every Jew in Europe.
The New York Times, the paper of record, finally asked a question worth asking.
What’s most incredible about it is that it took almost 11 years.
The most amazing part is that it remains the only question ever asked by a media organization that truly matters.
Now our descendants can fully know the rot of these times, and understand fully how America’s free press so profoundly failed the nation when power came to kill us.
