I think we all thought after fighting the bloody Revolution, and the Civil War, we had established representative government. How naive to believe there aren’t people who will try to steal it from our cold dead hands. No Kings must prevail.

A lot of important and appalling things happened this week that ought to be preoccupying me, but somehow, I have not been able to free myself from thinking about House Speaker Mike Johnson’s presentation to President Trump of the first annual “America First” award on Wednesday night. Future historians will ask, as many of us have asked in our own time, how this ridiculous cult could have grown around this ridiculous fraud of a man—how these Republicans could have decided that their pride, their virtue, their consciences are so worthless to them that they willingly participate in such staged exercises in hollow flattery.
There are longer clips floating around of Johnson discussing this award and praising Trump, but in the interest of sparing your mental health, I’ll expose you only to the brief, 30-second version here. Trust me, it’s enough to make the point.
'The president has done so much for the American people, and we want to honor him in some small way, some token of our appreciation for his leadership,' Johnson beamed at the fundraising dinner of the National Republican Campaign Committee in Washington. 'And so tonight, we have created a new award. We’re going to do something we’ve never done before. We are going to honor him with a new award that we will present annually from this point forward. But he is the suitable and fitting recipient of the first ever America First Award. We can think of no better title for what that is. That’s this beautiful golden statue here; appropriate, for the new golden era in America.'

Kind of like Trump imagines himself vis-à-vis Iran, with the difference that eagles have been known to stalk prey for hours, whereas Trump can’t keep any single thought in his head for longer than 10 minutes and has, in the month since the war started, announced about four different rationales for the war and changed strategy roughly every half hour. Any eagle with Trump’s attention span would starve to death in a matter of days.

Thank you Steve. I was at the No Kings protest in Boston on Saturday. Governor Healey and Senator Markey reminded us of our history. It was inspiring to hear the reminder on Boston Common surrounded by a crowd caring for our Republic. It was a bright and upliftling day that gave me hope.
Steve, I think we lost it. The Trump regime ponzi scheme is going to leave us bankrupt. A little more than 2% of the population went out to march Saturday, despite how good that felt.
Lynn, I think the turnout was about 25% greater than you state. There are roughly 340,000,000 Americans. Nine million turned out to protest. That equals 2.65% of the entire population. If you take into consideration the number of people who had to work, care for others, were too young, too old, or too disabled the % would be much higher.
Also, it will work to get the indifferent and uninformed to consider the horrors Trump is imposing on us and the world and just how terrible the future will be if we allow the Christian, bigoted, war-mongering, self-righteous ignoramuses, Hegseth being a prime example, to continue to rule over us.
I did not spend anytime excluding children and speculating on which adults could not have attended marches for various reasons. I just took the census population number. The last number I saw was an estimated 8,000,000 who turned out to march. It is still a small percentage of the population.
Regardless, the damage is done. The Trump regime has removed most of the guardrails that ensure a democratic process and filled the cabinet with grossly unqualified yes "men". As I am sure you know. Meanwhile, their ponzi schemes are making the family and their loyal richer by the day, as the war costs the taxpayers money in numbers I can barely comprehend. We still have a long way to go to get the jerk out of our house. I don't know how we fix this mess. I think we can forget a balanced budget ever again.

Trump and all of his cabinet and others he appointed to high office would be impeached, convicted, and removed from office. Unqualified members of both the House and Senate could be expelled by a 2/3 majority vote. We would then need to convene a Constitutional Convention to create a government that works for the people, all of the people, and so designed as to prevent any future take-over by fascists or any other extremist movements.
There is always a chance. The ship of state can be set right.

An extraordinary man, Franklin to this day is one of our greatest Americans. Like Socrates and DaVinci before him, and one or two geniuses that followed him, he was the man of the Century.
