I try to put it in front of my family, friends and acquaintances who would otherwise never give our complex American journey a thought because today leads to tomorrow. But today was 400 years in the making, that’s 400 years of wisdom, and as our poetic scribe and cometized prophet Mr. Twain made sure we knew, it rhymes and it rhymes and it rhymes. Keep it coming!
I truly am moved by these posts that recount our history from its first tentative yet confident beginnings. It’s inspiring to know that a functioning and prosperous society evolved from people with little shared values and interests who struggled together to make the most of their situation. That pattern is repeated throughout history, here and elsewhere. Humanity, even all animal life, resurrects itself constantly. If only it could do so more quickly, like immediately, here in the grand ol’ USA. Soon enough gives me no pleasure but, as we have come to believe, hope springs eternal. Addendum: …and comes from effort.

As one who is cautiously optimistic, I embrace the mistakes and progress over 250 years. We will come out of this insane disruption with a reset of a more civil society. I thoroughly enjoyed this post and look forward to the series. It's history at its best.
What strikes me about the Compact is the condition under which it was signed. It seems that it was not inspiration, but necessity. They had no legal standing where they landed. The Virginia charter was worthless.
41 men wrote their own authority into existence because the alternative was no authority at all.
Roosevelt understood this when he came to Provincetown in 1907: the Compact wasn't a founding document, it was a survival mechanism that became one.
Does that distinction matter to how we invoke it now?

The Pilgrims were not perfect, far from it. They were intolerant, racist, and narrow-minded but nonetheless they did hope to build their idea of a perfect society. Two quotes from our Dear Leader are illustrious of how far we have fallen from any form of decency or idealism:

Hypocrisy was built into the American Republic from the start, but some of your founding fathers at least recognised that fact, perhaps every advanced polity has to go through something like a Trump the Athenian democracy, the Roman republic, Britain and France, but at least then there weren’t nuclear weapons in the equation.then even if there were eschatological prophecies.
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We The People. These represent aspirations for all of humanity. These aspirations are founded on the notion that fundamentally we're all equal. Not first and foremost citizens of any nation - whether American or other. It's high time we began to see ourselves united in these aspirations. Identifications with any country, short of defining relative space and time, should give way to a larger and deeper understanding that we're all 'citizens' of the world. Hence the importance of conduct that invites unity, trust, love, respect, tolerance, good-will. This, as I see it, is the crafting of a "new age" in our time.
